The Origin of Belleek Pottery
Belleek Pottery was established by John Caldwell Bloomfield in 1849 in his beloved hometown - Castlecaldwell Estate in the village of Belleek south-west of Fermanagh. Bloomfield, who works as an amateur mineralogist, taught the idea of having a pottery business after he discovered that his land contained kaolin, shale, flint, feldspar, and clay - the needed resources to make a pottery. In order for his business to push through, Bloomfield ventured his plan to two of his colleagues; Robert Williams Armstrong an English architect who also has a green thumb for pottery, and David Mc Birney a well known rich Irish businessman. Bloomfield then suggested the local railway service to link Belleek in their route. As a result, Belleek potteries were easily transported to other parts of Ireland. Robert Williams Armstrong then imported several talented craftsmen from Stoke-on-Trent (England) to work for Belleek.
Belleek Pottery's trademark differs from time to time. The so-called First Period Black Mark from 1863 to 1890 primarily uses the black color. Other colors were also used. These are blue, red, green, pink, brown, and orange. At this time, Belleek Pottery pieces have the "BELLEEK, CO. FERMANAGH" or "BELLEEK" mark.
At present, there are many kinds of Belleek Pottery products. This include the Belleek Inspired, Shamrock Teapots, Lamps, Christmas Collection, Belleek Living, Giftware Collections, Shamrock Tableware, Belleek Reflect, and the Celebration Collectibles. Its lamp items include the Reflect Lamp, Daisy Lamp Kylemore Lamp, and the Colleen Lamp.
Belleek Pottery also has a variety of fine collections. These are the Butterfly Collection, Christmas Collection, Claddagh Collection, Country Trellis Collection, Daisy Collection, Inspired Collection, Kylemore Collection, Dalriada Collection, Nadine Collection, Reflect Collection, and the Tara Collection.
